Name: Jonathan Gales Country: England Job: Video maker
URL: http://www.jonathangales.co.uk About: I am interested in architecture, film and projects that combine to deal with both. I was born on the sunny island of Jersey and moved across the water to study architecture at University of Brighton, graduating with a first class degree in 2007. I am in my final year studying a masters degree at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. I regularly collaborate with photographers and digital artists on film, video and animation projects. I have exhibited architectural, photographic and film work at a variety of exhibitions and festivals including the Shanghai Expo 2010, the Royal Academy of Arts London and the Whitechapel Gallery. Get Inspired by: I find my inspiration all kinds of everyday situations. I like to focus on spaces and experiences that strike me and build projects around them so a lot of my work references everyday life. I have a great set of peers in different disciplines around me, some of whom I collaborate with. We constantly discuss our work together to crit and push each other collectively forwards.

Tools/Techniques used: Speculative Landscapes is a short animation that digitally reconstructs a train journey evolving the environments that it travels through into a suggestive re-representation of the existing and possible future. Original footage was recorded on the Maglev train in Shanghai during October 2010 and used as a base from which the film was constructed. The footage was motioned tracked generating a 3D data map from which the context was recreated and choreographed into three main scenes linked together to appear as one shot. The environments were created using 3D, 2.5D and matte painting techniques with HD footage of the subject composited on top.
