Name: Depotvisuals / Christoph Bader, Dominik Kolb, Julian Rohrbach Country: Job: Design Studio Url: http://art.depotvisuals.de About: We are a design studio located in Germany. We started our depotArt project because we all share an interest in generative design and techniques. Get Inspired by: All our works are based on processes. First a process is defined and then all possible variables within the process are varied to get different visuals outcomes. We think that all things that are visual beautiful to us humans are based on certain processes. And the ability of us humans to understand those processes (even if it is subconscious) is what makes them beautiful. Although our works are based on certain mathematically determinated process, the creation process of each series itself is rather spontaneous. We am not sketching things out on paper before we try them out Also we don’t try to achieve a certain form rather we am trying to develop a blueprint that could lead to a series of objects or images. That’s also the hard part. Trying to find a process that is variable but yet appealing to the eye. The more pictures a series has the more the underlying blueprint becomes visible to the viewer. The tool of choice for our works is a 3d software called Houdini that is mostly used in the visualsFX industry. We use that software because it mostly sets no limitations to the processes we want to define and there are numerous ways to implement techniques that aren’t natively supported by the software.

What is Farb and how did it all started?
FARB is an illustrative design studio from Maastricht, The Netherlands. Our name comes from the German word “Farbe”, meaning “colour”. With FARB we wanted to add our own bit of colour to this world, as it is an essential part of everthing! We started about 3 years ago, almost immediately after we finished the course Communication- and Multimedia Design in The Netherlands. We decided to start our own studio because we wanted do things our own way.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Everyday life, the work of others, music, movies, colours… pretty much anything can be an inspiration to us. We usually start by defining the feel of what we’re trying to visualize. From that perspective we’ll start to look for shapes, styles, elements, colours and everything else that can be of use. Sometimes you nail it right away, some other times it takes a lot of experimenting.

What tools do you use?
Pencil, paper, illustrator, photoshop, flash, wacom, the internets. We don’t work offline a lot although we start almost every piece of work with a rough sketch on paper.

Where do you want to be with your company in the next five years?
We’d like to continue what we’re doing now, but maybe on a slightly larger scale. We’d like to work for a lot more different brands and agencies to strengthen our personal portfolios/resumés. Maybe our focus will lay more on creative-/art-/strategic direction in stead of mainly the creation-part.

Did you win any awards?
Nope. Not yet.

Any cool upcoming projects?
Right now: A european brand-site for a big clothing empire and an exclusive Exposif-wallpaper for Maxalot.
