It’s when you open your eyes and look just that little bit closer at the world around us. Living by the sea is one of my greatest inspirations. I find looking at the waves let’s my mind and ideas just flow. Tools/Techniques: I use a range of different materials: watercolour pencils, felt tips, acrylic paint, fine liners, and pencils. For some of my illustrations I use Photoshop to overlay the drawings onto photo’s I have taken. I have no technique really, I go with what springs into my head at the time.

She is very lucky to be able to design and illustrate for a living in between walks with Desmond the Border Terrier Pup. Helen works in gouache, watercolour and pencil and screenprints selected designs with her guru & mentor Phil Sheffield from a vast studio in Suffolk. Her passion for her work is illustrated in everything she designs, creatures and characters burst into life in her colourful and gently humorous designs. Helen has worked on a number of projects for many high-profile organisations and companies in the UK, Europe and beyond including John Lewis, Boden, Pedlars, Te Neues and the Tate. Her illustrations have also adorned an array of products over her career including t-shirts, porcelain mugs, greeting cards and stationery. Get Inspired by: My daily routine is a brisk morning with Desmond the dog. Chasing a lunatic puppy (or the hairy piglet as we like to call him) round a park while catching up on the day’s news with my fellow dog walkers gets me up and out and awake. I have a small but lovely home filled with family photos of good times. I’m surrounded by books from my childhood and often delve into these classics. My favourites are the Hamlyn – Golden Books. Full of illustrated fairy tales and popular stories. I also have a number of the city book titles by Miroslav sasek which are great to browse. Music and Radio 6 music & radio 4 podcasts (love start the week for uplifting ideas on creativity and development of ideas) keep me smiling and entertained throughout the day. I love listening to Radcliffe & Maconie. Quite often I will break the day up with a trip down to the garden with Desmond. He’ll disappear down the back of the shed looking for fantastic mr fox while I get my hands dirty, pottering about in the hedgerows and delving into the pond for half an hour. It usually chases away any creative block I might be having. Then of course there the infamous bourbon biscuits and a classic builders tea. I think if I was cut in half it would say “sponsored by Bourbons and Yorkshire tea” inside!
